In my opinion, the greatest advantage of an infinity scarf is that it keeps your neck warm without having long tails hanging down, getting in your way! In fact, these are the only type of scarves I have been wearing lately. If you would like a regular scarf pattern, read my article on how to crochet a scarf.

How To Crochet An Infinity Scarf Tutorial

There are two basic ways to crochet an infinity scarf. You can choose to crochet a rectangle which is then stitched together along the short sides, or you can crochet the scarf in the round, in which case you won’t have to worry about a seam at all. Here I have given you 2 styles of infinity scarf crochet patterns that are beginner-friendly.

Some people like a long infinity scarf that wraps around your neck multiple times; others prefer one that just wraps around your neck once. The beauty of making your own infinity scarf is that it is easy to adapt the basic pattern to the style which you like the most.

The best thing about crocheting an infinity scarf is that you don’t have to worry about gauge. This makes it an ideal beginner project.

Abbreviations for Crocheting an Infinity Scarf

All crochet terms are written in US terms.

Supplies for Easy Crochet Infinity Scarf Pattern

  • YARN: I suggest a thick yarn, such as a chunky or super bulky yarn (category 5 or 6). This makes it lovely and quick to) work up and is extra warm and cozy. However, it can be made with any type of yarn.
  • CROCHET HOOK: To suit yarn size. You will need a 6.5- 9 mm hook for very thick yarn. (JM US sizes, 3-00 UK sizes.) Check the ball band of your yarn for the best size.
  • YARN NEEDLE or tapestry needle.

Sizes For Crochet Infinity Scarves

If you are crocheting your scarf without a specific pattern, you will need to calculate the size you want. The size does depend upon the number of times you want the scarf to wrap around your neck. Here is a guideline:

Best Length for Crochet Infinity Scarf:

Here are some suggested lengths for a crochet infinity scarf:

Single wrap 30-35” 76-89cm
Single wrap, drapey 40-45” 102-114cm
Long, 2 wraps 65-70” 165-178cm
Extra long 75-80” 190-203cm

Best Width for Crochet Infinity Scarf:

If you are making a single wrap cowl, you will generally need it to be wider than a multiple wrap cowl. The more wraps you have, the more volume you will get.

Wide 10-12” 25-30cm
Standard 7-8” 18-20cm
Narrow 5-6” 13-15cm

These measurements are just a guideline. You do not have to stick to them exactly! You can make your scarf as long or as wide as you fancy.

Please note that metric measurements are rounded off and approximate.

How To Make An Infinity Scarf With Any Yarn

If you want to make the infinity scarf with another yarn- either because chunky/bulky yarn is too thick for you or because you want to use up scraps, use the measurement guides given above.

Make your starting chain long enough to fit over your head and drape around your neck softly, or for double (or more) wraps, make the starting chain long enough to be doubled or tripled, and still fit over your head. This will give your length. Just keep crocheting until your scarf is the width you would like.

How to Crochet an Infinity Scarf with HDC Ribbing

This rib-style infinity scarf uses half double crochet (hdc) in the back loops to create a lengthwise ribbing that gives a beautiful texture and added warmth. Half double crochet is one of the basic crochet stitches and is easy for beginners.

How To Work Back Loop Only

If you work a row of crochet stitches and look at the top of that row, you will see a row of V-shaped stitches at the top. Usually, you insert your hook through the entire V to work your next row of stitches and have 2 loops over your hook.

If you look carefully at the top of the stitches, the part of the V is closest to you is the front loop, and the part farthest away, at the back of the V, is the back loop.

Now, to work BLO, you will skip over the front loop, and insert your hook into the center of the V, so that it only goes through the back loop to start your stitch. You will be inserting your hook into the back loop, then working a hdc.

FAQs About Crocheting an Infinity Scarf

How much yarn will I need for an infinity scarf?

Depending on the length of the crochet infinity scarf, you will need 1 to 2 skeins of yarn.

How wide should my infinity scarf be?

An average infinity scarf is around 8 to 10 inches wide (20-25cm). For a narrow scarf it may be as narrow as 5 inches (13cm).

How many chains do I need to start an infinity scarf?

This depends on the style and length of the scarf you want to make. The easiest solution is to work a long row of chains then wrap it around your neck as many times as you want the scarf to wrap.

Add more chains, or pull out some chains accordingly. Do remember that it must be able to fit over your head as well!

What is the difference between an infinity scarf, a cowl, a neck warmer, and a snood?

A cowl is usually a single wrap that fits around your neck once, loosely. A neck warmer is the same as a cowl.

An infinity scarf has different interpretations. Some see it as a long scarf with no ends, (hence ‘infinity’) that you can wrap around your neck multiple times.

Some see it as a cowl, made as a rectangle (see Style 1), then twisted around once before you sew up the short ends. This makes your scarf into a mobius strip or infinity sign. (∞)

If you choose this interpretation, make your rectangle a little longer to allow for the twist! It does make the scarf drape attractively. Some see the name ‘infinity scarf’ as just a general interpretation of all of the above!

A snood is a slightly wider and longer cowl, which is wide and long enough to pull up over your head, like a hoodie.
